But I actually didn’t, not really, until after I got sick.

I thought, “yes, of course, disabled people are worthy and valuable exactly as they are,” but when I was the one who was disabled… boy was that a different story entirely.

It’s ok for “other people” to be sick and need to rest, but not me.

It’s ok for “other people” to ask for accommodations or drop commitments, but not me!

Being unable to work, perform, and care for others in the ways I was used to utterly shattered my sense of self.

I thought, “who am I, if I’m not this active, high-achieving person that everyone can rely on?”

And then more quietly, “will anyone love me like this?”

And quieter still, in the deep shadows of my mind, “do I even have a right to exist?”

This is one of the most painful parts of being sick — the loss of self and the loss of external validation.

In some ways it’s worse than the symptoms themselves!

And it keeps us from doing what we actually need to do to heal.  

 

I always got so annoyed when people talked about mindset work for chronic fatigue or pain. Like, excuse me, I didn’t imagine that car crash. I didn’t “think” myself into exhaustion!

But what I came to realize is that our internal world (including our nervous system) is unavoidably the place from which we see our situation and make all our decisions.

 

When I was looking at my body as a broken machine that had maliciously betrayed me, I was not able to understand what it actually needed to recover.

When I saw my illness as a cage I was trapped in, I kept banging my fists against the bars instead of finding the keys to healing that were already inside me.

Instead of simply believing all people were worthy, I had to live it.

I had to embody that sacredness.

It’s a warm, bright light in my chest that can never be dimmed.

It’s a calm, still pool of peace in my pelvis that I can always return to.

It’s a sturdy root system of self trust that I feel in the places where my feet meet the floor.

It’s feeling safe in my body for the very first time.

 

I had to act from THAT truth — the truth that I’m not broken, there is nothing to fix, I am completely worthy exactly as I am.

And so are you.

Paradoxically, the more I accepted myself, illness and all, the more the fatigue lessened.
